31 March 2009 - 8:45Closure of Casino Website to Cost £4 Million per Day

Last week American FBI agents arrested the CEO of one of the largest casino websites.

David Carruthers, the CEO of BetonSports which is a London based sports betting casino website was arrested on a layover in Dallas Fort Worth Airport. He was on his way to Antigua and Barbuda where the casino website is licensed.

American lawyers for the company advised BetonSports to close down the US branch of their casino website. This decision is likely to cost the company more that £4 million is lost revenue, approximately $7.4 million US.

For almost three years the Caribbean Island of Antigua and Barbuda has been petitioning the World Trade Organisation to investigate US laws as they argue that they don't comply with the WTO rulings. They claim that the new clampdowns in America are discriminatory and jobs will be lost in nations like Antigua and Barbuda, where they are trying to create new jobs to diversify. The islands want a steady industry so its people don't have to rely on seasonal work that the tourist trade gives them.

The restraining order that the US has imposed on BetonSports doesn't just require the company to close down its US casino website. They require that the company takes out a full page advertisement in a US national newspaper that tells Americans it is against the law to gamble online. The government also requires the casino website returns all money to its US customers.

Many casino website proponents argue that it is unfair to also close the poker site of the UK Company in the US as poker is considered a game of skill and one US court ruled that games of skill over the internet are legal.

The majority of BetonSports business comes from US customers who generate over 90 per cent of its turnover. This amounts to £970 million or $1.78 billion US.

The shares of casino websites that do not offer sports gambling saw a rise this week as opposed to sports betting websites that took a considerable dive after the arrest.

13 December 2007 - 7:45Can the lottery be beat when the jackpot gets high enough

If “beating” the lotto means having a payback/risk ratio of greater than 1, I would say that state lottos are definitely beatable.
In Texas Pick-6 lotto, you pick 6 mutually exclusive numbers from 1 to 50. That gives you approximately 1/16,000,000 chance of winning.<

Many people do not play until the lotto jackpot goes over $16,000,000, as a result. It’s a little more complicated than that though, because the money is paid out over 20 years, and you have to account for inflation. The actual value of the money you get paid is (assuming constant %5 inflation) is the jackpot divided by 20 times the sum from 0 to 19 of (.95)**N, where N is the summation index. The sum is 12.83, in this example, so you really need to wait until the lotto is (20/12.83)*16,000,000, or approximately $25 million. Texas Pick-6 frequently exceeds this total, but resets to $3 million when somebody wins.

Of course, all this is predicated on being the sole winner of a $25 million lotto, or at least, say, winning $75 million and splitting with at most two other people. You can reduce the number of people that you split with by picking the numbers that nobody else does. I use this formula in picking numbers:

People tend to play birthdays. Don’t pick any number less than 32.

People sometimes will play geometric sequences on the card, such as rows, and columns, and diagonals. Don’t pick these either.

Even educated people will refuse to play a numeric sequence, such as 32-33-34-35-36-37, because they think that it isn’t “random enough”. Sequences are good to pick, as long as they do not occupy a single row or column.

6 December 2007 - 11:27Hamas Announces Plans to Turn Jericho Casino into Mosque

Hamas, in one of its first policy actions since it won control of the Palestinian government, has announced plans to close down the only casino gaming center in the Palestinian Authority.

The casino gaming center that is the target of Hamas fury is located in the Jericho Municipality. It is owned by an Austrian casino gaming company, and opened in 1998. The casino has been widely associated with the corruption of the former regime, since PA authorities in the PA were thought to have reaped many of the casino profits.

Hamas legislators told reporters that one of their highest priorities is to close the casino gaming center as soon as possible. Nayef Rajoub, who is the brother of former security chief Jibril Rajoub, is one of those who are leading the protest.

Rajoub and other lawmakers who have taken up the cause say that the casino gaming center may in fact be turned into a mosque. The casino is located on land owned by a Wakf, a special Islamic charity trust- a fact which further enrages its opponents.

Gambling is illegal in Islam, and games of chances are referred to as an infamy of Satan’s handiwork in the Koran.
